Tooth Extractions – Removal of Teeth

Tooth extractions are usually a last resort in restorative dentistry. If you have a tooth that has been fractured or severely damaged by decay, Dr. Krasniqi will initially try to repair it with a filling, crown or substitute procedure. In certain cases though, too much damage has occurred for the tooth to be restored. When this happens, the tooth needs to be removed or extracted. A loose tooth will also need extraction if it cannot be repaired, even with a bone replacement procedure, commonly known as bone grafting.

Common Causes for Teeth Extractions

  • Extra teeth are preventing other teeth from emerging.
  • Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out in time for adult teeth to come in.
  • Individuals getting braces might have teeth extracted to allow more room for the teeth that being shifted into place.
  • Those undergoing radiation to the head and neck may possibly need to have teeth in the field of radiation extracted.
  • Teeth potentially need to be removed if they could become a source of infection following an organ transplant.
  • Wisdom teeth need to be removed if they are decaying, cause discomfort, have a cyst, or infection. Wisdom teeth often get trapped in the jaw and never surface, which can aggravate the gum, causing aching and swelling. Under these circumstances extraction is necessary.

How Are Teeth Extracted?

There are two categories of extractions:

  • A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gum line. In a simple extraction, Dr. Krasniqi may use general anesthesia to numb the area being prepared for extraction. Once the area loses feeling, Krasniqi will loosen the tooth with an apparatus known as an elevator. Following this step, Dr. Krasniqi uses a tool called a forceps to remove the tooth pain-free.
  • A surgical extraction tends to be a more intricate procedure. Surgical extractions are employed when a tooth has broken off at the gum line, or has not yet surfaced. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia can be administered before the procedure depending upon patient circumstances.
